Aligning Client Chats to Your Capacity with Kristen from Going Ultraviolet

EXPERT INTERVIEW

Our theme for June 2022 is Gather and I just LOVE Kristen’s unique way of gathering the information she needs for a project in a way that feels cozy for her and her clients.

I met Kristen through my web designer Shaina from Dawn & Delight, who hired her to create the manifesto on my about page (which you can view by clicking here.)

We did the whole thing over Voxer and I felt SOO relieved that whole time. There was something magical about not having to do a Zoom call. I love a great Zoom chat so I didn’t expect this reaction. That’s how I knew Kristen had made this decision from actually listening to herself and her clients.

I firmly believe that listening to ourselves and our community is one of the keys to sustainable business so I asked her to share more about it!

Here’s the interview:

Tell us about what your business does:

I provide innovative sales copy strategy for exhausted, ethical biz owners.

What's happening in your business that you're excited about?

I recently archived my entire Instagram feed and replaced it with a 9-post "Feed Funnel." The funnel acts as a static feed where new followers can get more information about my business and offers. Now I don't have to worry about content creation for feed posts and can put my focus on other parts of my social media platform that gain more engagement and traction, like IG Stories and DMs! It's been really refreshing to step away from constant content creation and get to put all of my effort toward the things that actually drive ROI in my business. The data I am gathering has also allowed me to more easily identify where my clients are getting stuck in my sales funnel, which is something I didn't expect.

You use Voxer to support your clients rather than a typical Zoom chat. Why?

I've handled all my sales calls on Zoom for a few years, but the pandemic forced me to spend more time on it and I was starting to burn out. I noticed that discovery calls were starting to frequently run over time and that prospective clients were asking the same questions that could be addressed faster and easier. I constantly had to troubleshoot weak internet connections and make sure that my home office wasn't cluttered before taking every call. I was exhausted from it all. As a verbal processor, I knew I really enjoyed the quick nature of sending audio messages on Voxer. I use the app all the time to chat with other business owners. What if I used it to respond to inquiries?

What is your favorite part about meeting this way?

I don't need to be chained to my desk, it doesn't matter if my office has been freshly tidied, and I can respond to an inquiry as fast as possible without having to wait for an official call to be scheduled! It usually only takes a few short messages back and forth for someone to get their questions answered, which means I can send a proposal to them quickly.

In what other ways do you support your clients in a way that reduces burnout and overwhelm?

I help my clients write ethical sales copy and design Instagram sales funnels strategies that are clear (not just compelling) so that their leads can shop with agency and independence, find all of the information they need to prequalify themselves for an offer, and feel safe enough to purchase. This reduces the amount of time my clients have to spend fielding FAQs and pitching in their inbox, so they can prioritize that precious energy on promoting those offers or working on their visibility efforts!

What are you most proud of in your business?

I am proud that I've always been brave enough to say, "Just because something has always been done this way, doesn't mean it's right or that it's the only way." I have always been willing to take the risk to try something different in my business if it's more compassionate, fulfilling, or aligns with my values... even if that means growth is slow. I'd rather grow slowly and joyfully by making choices out of integrity than reach "success" quickly by doing things that harm myself and others.

What is something in your life that brings you joy?

I love kayaking in the cool, early mornings of summer, having deep conversations with good friends, and trying delicious new brunch spots around beautiful Sacramento!

What is your favorite way to celebrate accomplishments?

My best friends are great celebrators. We celebrate everything, even the small things, because life is too short not to! I'll text one of them when I've accomplished something I'm proud of and we'll plan to have dinner on the patio of one of our favorite restaurants.

Do you have any special ways that you avoid burnout in your business?

One of the best practical lessons a past supervisor taught me was that when I am feeling exhausted, over-stressed, or anxious, it is really healthy to shut my computer down for an hour and take a walk. The work will be there when I get back. I live one block away from a gorgeous park and try to take a mile walk break every day to ground myself and feel the sunshine on my skin. Fresh air works miracles for my mind!

How do you know when it's time to slow down or step back?

I know it's time to slow down when everything inside me is screaming that I can't slow down. That's my sign that I'm headed towards burnout.
